2005 HONDA ST1300 MOTORCYCLE. I PURCHASED A TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM THAT WAS MADE BY TIREGARD (HTTP://WINGSTUFF.COM/PGROUP_DETAIL/40_HOME_MONTHLY_SPECIALS/23662_SHOW_CHROME_TIREGARD_TIRE_AIR_PRESSURE_MONITOR/) THIS IS A WIRELESS SYSTEM WHICH CONSISTS OF TWO SENSORS THAT ARE SCREWED ONTO TO THE TIRE'S VALVE STEM TO MONITOR THE INTERNAL AIR PRESSURE. MY INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE RIDING MY MOTORCYCLE ON THE FREEWAY AT APPROX 70 MPH WHEN THE FRONT VALVE STEM TORE RESULTING IN A RAPID LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE AND A FLAT TIRE. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THIS WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT BUT WAS RECENTLY CONTACTED BY ANOTHER MOTORCYCLIST WHO EXPERIENCED THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE. ALTHOUGH I REALLY LIKE THIS SYSTEM, METAL VALVE STEMS SHOULD BE REQUIRED. TREAD SEPARATION ON A DUNLOP SPORTMAX ROADSMART MOTORCYCLE TIRE, SIZE 120/70ZR18 M/C. A PIECE OF TREAD APPROXIMATELY 1.5" X 3" SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE CARCASS. TIRE WAS INFLATED TO THE RECOMMENDED 42 PSI. TIRE HAD BEEN IN SERVICE APPROXIMATELY FOUR MONTHS, WITH <=4852 MILES OF USE. *TR

THE VEHICLE'S MAKE AND MODEL HAS TWO RECALLS, # 05V010000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) AND # 04V568000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER THREE TIMES BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTS. THE ENGINE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 13,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 500.
